Mercedes-Benz Fashion week kicks off in New York

15 Sep

Historical overview….The first New York Fashion Week, then called Press Week, was the world’s first organized fashion week. Held in 1943, the event was designed to attract attention away from French fashion during World War II, when fashion industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows.Fashion publicist Eleanor Lamber organized an event she called “Press Week” to showcase American designers for fashion journalists. Press Week was a success, and fashion magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled with French designs, increasingly featured American fashion.

New York Fashion Week, recently branded as the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is a semiannual Fashion week.  It is one of four major fashion weeks in the fashion industry. The Spring 2009 Fashion Week was held September 5–12, 2008. The Fall 2009 Fashion Week was held February 13–20, 2009. The ongoing Spring 2010 Pret a Porter Fashion Week will be held from September 1oth to the 17th, 2009.

Since 1993, Fashion Week has been in held New York City in Bryant Park (42nd and Sixth), an 8-acre park that is converted to a temporary fashion arena with  huge, air-conditioned tents and consists of  several venues for the designers to show their collections.

Admission is by invitation only, to the fashion industry, fashion press, assorted celebrities, and internet based Fashion press (e.g. District L, Fashionista and FWD)

This most recent fashion week certainly promises to interesting if nothing more (for an amateur observer in the distance such as myself).

Designs by popular names like BCBG Max Azria, Christian Louboutin, Michael Angel, Cole Haan, Anna Su, and Rachel Roy have already been featured on blogposts across the cyber fashion scope.
